How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone

Your iPhone saves photos as HEIC, and most apps, forms and older devices still expect JPG. Here are the two ways to get JPGs — convert the photos you already have, and change one setting so new photos save as JPG from now on.

Why iPhone photos save as HEIC

Since iOS 11 (2017), iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. HEIC keeps similar quality in about half the file size of JPG, which saves storage on your phone — but many websites, forms and Windows apps cannot open HEIC files, so you end up needing JPG copies.

Method 1: Convert the photos you already have

Photos already on your iPhone stay in HEIC until you convert them. The fastest way is in your browser, with no app and nothing to install:

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter on your iPhone.
  2. Add your HEIC photos from your photo library — one photo or a whole batch.
  3. Keep the format on JPG. The default quality of 90% looks identical to the original for photos in normal use.
  4. Download each JPG, or download the whole batch as one ZIP.

Your photos are converted on your own device, so nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

Method 2: Stop your iPhone saving HEIC in future

To make new photos save as JPG, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. From then on, new photos will be saved as JPG. This only affects photos taken after you change the setting — photos already taken stay in HEIC and still need converting with Method 1.

One honest note: converting a photo to JPG does not restore quality already lost by earlier compression. It only changes the format so the photo opens everywhere.

Will converting to JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, so a small amount of quality is traded for compatibility. At 90% quality the difference is not visible in normal use. Converting cannot restore quality already lost by earlier compression.
